Memorial scholarship named for Muslow

A Louisiana Forestry Foundation scholarship has been established for Stephen Muslow by his family and friends, especially longtime family friend Hanna Gamble.

It will be named the Stephen Muslow Memorial Scholarship and will be awarded to a student majoring in forestry at a university in Louisiana.

“I wanted to start a scholarship with the Louisiana Forestry Foundation in Steve Muslow’s name because he loved the forestry industry and education,” said Gamble, who manages St. Lucia Tree Farm in DeSoto Parish. “Steve’s hard work and dedication to the LFA helped make it the powerful and successful community it is today.”

Muslow, a consulting forester who founded Muslow Forestry Inc. in Shreveport more than 40 years ago, died Sept. 11, 2017, at 67 years old. He was a longtime member of the Louisiana Forestry Association, became a Lifetime Member in 2005 and served as president of the LFA 2009-2010.

Muslow’s father, Marvin L. Muslow, was instrumental in nurturing his love of the forest and the land, said Matt Muslow, son of Stephen Muslow. That legacy was continued “by teaching his children and grandchildren about being great stewards of the timberland.”

Gamble’s father, Jack Gamble Jr., and Muslow were close friends, Hanna Gamble said. That led to her forging an equally strong friendship with Muslow, referring to him as her closest mentor, especially after her father’s death.

“I am thrilled that Steve’s legacy will live on through this scholarship and the future generations of foresters who benefit from it,” she said. “This scholarship means that more students will have the opportunity to learn about forestry and what a rewarding career it is.” LFA Executive Director C.A. “Buck” Vandersteen said Muslow was a dedicated forester, a true professional and great supporter of the association.
