Louisiana Works, the state employment agency, will implement changes to its unemployement insurance program begining with new claims filed Jan. 4.
The changes include increased work search requirements for those filing for unemployment. Filers will be required to completed five work-search activities, up from three, which could include applying for jobs, attending interviews, updating a résumé or participating in job-search or training programs. The new law, Act 151, that was passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor takes effect Dec. 31.
"Unemployment insurance is meant to support workers while thery're searching for their next opportunity," Secretary Susie Schowen said in a press release. "By strengthening work search requirements and creating a more efficient process for employers to report violations, we are improving accountability and connecting more jobseekers to real opportunities."
Updated rules for eligibility could mean a person might lose eligibility if, "without good reason," they:
• Don't apply for available, suitable work
• Refuse a suitable job offer
• Miss a scheduled job interview
• Fail to return to customary self-employment
• Decline to take part in an approved training program when directed by Louisiana Works
According to the press release, the new law also allows employers to report anyone who misses interviews or refuses job offers using an online reporting form on laworks.net under the Employers section.
